Crown thinning is the process of removing select branches to thin out the fullness of the tree. Our tree surgeons utilise the correct pruning techniques in order to create a balanced crown structure.
Crown thinning is done without altering the shape or size of the tree. By crown thinning you also reduce the weight on the tree's heavier limbs and removes dead, weak, overreaching or duplicated branches.
The Crown Thinning Process
Tree crown thinning involves systematically removing a number of secondary branches whilst maintaining a balanced crown structure, thinning out and reducing density. Crown thinning will not alter the overall size or shape of the tree.
Crossing or rubbing branches are removed together with diseased wood. The tree is then pruned to reduce the crown density whilst retaining a natural shape.
Crown thinning results in improved light levels passing through the canopy and so reduces the shade beneath. It reduces the sail effect of the crown and also reduces the wind loading upon the limbs of the tree. The removal of weak, crossing or duplicated branches.
Crown thinning is applied mainly to broad-leaved tree species and commonly when pruning fruit trees. Our tree surgeons work to a specification when completing crown thinning. For example 15%. For more information call our friendly team.
Avoid producing "lion’s tails", tufts of branches and foliage at the ends of branches, caused by removing all inner lateral branches and foliage.
Lion’s tails can result in sun-scalding, epicormic sprouting and weak branch structure and breakage. Branches that rub or cross another branch should be removed.
To avoid unnecessary stress and prevent excessive production of epicormic sprouts, no more than one-quarter of the living crown should be removed at a time. If it is necessary to remove more, it should be done over successive years.

Tree Crown Reduction
During a crown reduction the tree's crown is made smaller without spoiling the shape of the tree. This is very skilled work and often involves a method of pruning called “drop-crotching”. Again it is done to reduce the weight in potentially dangerous trees, but can also be useful if trees are obstructing or damaging buildings or power lines.

Tree Crown Lifting
Lower Branches are removed to effectively raise the crown, which is the whole branch structure of the tree. This is a very useful treatment of large garden trees where shading is a problem, as the light can come in underneath the tree.

Tree Crown Cleaning
Removal of dead and dying wood; stumps of broken or poorly cut branches; unwanted epicormic shoots. Crown cleaning can also include the removal of unwanted climbing plants such as ivy or foreign objects such as wires.
Tree pollarding is a method of management where the main leading stem of a young tree is removed to encourage regrowth. The regrowth that then occurs can be regularly removed (re-pollarding) back to the same point (the pollard head).
